Pure Substances
A pure substance is a form of matter that has a constant and uniform chemical composition throughout and consists of only one type of particle.
Key Properties of Pure Substances
- They have fixed and definite properties.
- They possess a sharp (fixed) melting point.
- Their boiling point is constant, not a range.
- They can only be changed or broken down by chemical methods.
- They cannot be separated using physical methods such as sieving or filtration.
- The components of a pure substance do not retain their individual properties.
Types of Pure Substances
Pure substances are classified into two main types:
1. Elements
Elements consist of only one type of atom and cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
- Oxygen (O2)
- Gold (Au)
2. Compounds
Compounds are formed when two or more elements chemically combine in a fixed ratio. They also consist of only one type of particle.
- Water (H2O)
- Common salt (NaCl)
